Elton John to Receive First Ever BRIT Icon Award

On Monday, September 2, Elton will be honoured as the first recipient of the prestigious BRITs Icon Award. The inaugural event will take place in central London and will be filmed for broadcast later in the month on ITV.

This event will feature a live performance from Elton of some of his best-loved songs as well as new material from his forthcoming album, The Diving Board, combined with a candid interview and special guest appearances.

The BRITs Icon Award will become part of the established family of BRIT Awards, but will be celebrated at a separate stand-alone event each year. Together with the music industry charity The BRIT Trust, one of this year's show’s beneficiaries will be the Royal Academy of Music, where Elton trained before embarking on his amazing career.

Elton comments: "It's a tremendous honour and a real thrill for me to have my work acknowledged in this way, and I'm really looking forward to participating in what promises to be a very special occasion."

BPI and BRIT Awards Ltd Chief Executive, Geoff Taylor, comments: “The BRIT Awards has recognised many exceptional artists whose music has connected with millions of fans. A few of these artists, such as Sir Elton John, have achieved such a level of artistic creativity and originality, critical acclaim, global recognition and popular success that they deserve to be recognised as true Icons of our cultural life. With our broadcast partners ITV, our aim is to provide the ultimate tribute to these musical superheroes, which not only recognises their unique achievements but which is also spectacular entertainment.”
